Prostate cancer (PCa) is an extremely common genitourinary malignancy among elderly men. Many evidence have shown the efficacy of curcumin (CUR) in inhibiting the progression of PCa. However, the pharmacological function of CUR in PCa is still not quite clear. In this research, CUR was found to suppress the proliferation and enhance the apoptotic rate in in vitro PCa cell models in a dose- and time-dependent manner. In a xenograft animal model, the administration of CUR contributed to a significant decrease in the growth of the xenograft tumor induced by the transplanted PC-3 cells. Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 C is implicated in the modulation of multiple types of cancers. In humans, the expression levels of UBE2C are significantly higher in PCa versus benign prostatic hyperplasia. Treatment with CUR decreased the expression of UBE2C, whereas it increased miR-483-3p expression. In contrast with the control mice, the CUR-treated mice showed a significant reduction in UBE2C and Ki-67 in PCa cells. The capability of proliferation, migration, and invasion of PCa cells was inhibited by the knockdown of UBE2C mediated by siRNA. Furthermore, dual luciferase reporter gene assay indicated the binding of miR-483-3p to UBE2C. In summary, CUR exerts its antitumor effects through regulation of the miR-483-3p/UBE2C axis by decreasing UBE2C and increasing miR-483-3p. The findings may also provide new molecular markers for PCa diagnosis and treatment.

Diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) is a frequent complication of diabetes. Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II α (CaMKIIα), a multi-functional serine/threonine kinase subunit, is mainly located in the surface layer of the spinal cord dorsal horn (SCDH) and the primary sensory neurons in dorsal root ganglion (DRG). Numerous studies have indicated electroacupuncture (EA) takes effect in various kinds of pain. In this research, we explored whether CaMKIIα on rats' SCDH and DRG participated in DNP and further explored the mechanisms underlying the analgesic effects of EA. The DNP model in rats was successfully established by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. Certain DNP rats were treated with intrathecal injections of KN93, a CaMKII antagonist, and some of the DNP rats received EA intervention. The general conditions, behaviors, the expressions of CaMKIIα and phosphorylated CaMKIIα (p-CaMKIIα) were evaluated. DNP rats' paw withdrawal threshold was reduced and the expressions of p-CaMKIIα in SCDH and DRG were upregulated compared with the Normal group, while the level of CaMKIIα showed no significance. KN93 attenuated DNP rats' hyperalgesia and reduced the expressions of p-CaMKIIα. We also found EA attenuated the hyperalgesia of DNP rats and reduced the expressions of p-CaMKIIα. The above findings suggest that p-CaMKIIα in SCDH and DRG is involved in DNP. The analgesic effect of EA in DNP might be related to the downregulation of p-CaMKIIα expression level. Our study further supports that EA can be an effective clinical treatment for DNP.

As a global malignancy with high mortality rate, targeted drug development for Uterine Cervical Neoplasms is an important direction. The traditional formula Guizhi Fuling Wan (GFW) is widely used in gynecological diseases. However, its potential mechanism of action remains to be discovered. We retrieved GFW and cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) targets from public databases. The protein-protein interaction network was obtained by string computational analysis and imported Cytoscape_v3.9.0 to obtain the core network and the top 10 Hub genes. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes were used for enrichment analysis of the core network, and then molecular docking to verify whether the selected signaling pathway binds well to the core node. Finally, clinical prognostic analysis and expression differences of Hub genes were validated using the Cancer Genome Atlas database and R language. Our search yielded 152 common targets for GFW and CSCC. The interleukin-17 signaling pathway, tumor necrosis factor signaling pathway, and Toll-like signaling pathway were then selected for further molecular docking from the hub genes enrichment analysis results, which showed good binding. Among the Hub genes, JUN, VEGFA, IL1B, and EGF had a poor prognosis for CSCC. In conclusion, this study illustrates that GFW can have adjuvant therapeutic effects on CSCC through multiple targets and multiple pathways, providing a basis for further research.

Background: The aim of this study was to explore the impact of post-implantation syndrome (PIS) on prognosis outcomes in individuals with type B acute aortic syndrome (AAS) undergoing thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR). Patients and methods: Data from type B AAS individuals who underwent TEVAR from January 2014 to April 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Study subjects were divided into PIS and non-PIS (nPIS) groups and postoperative clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results: Our study cohort of 74 individuals with type B AAS included 40 aortic dissection (AD), 30 intramural hematoma (IMH), 4 penetrating aortic ulcer (PAU). The incidence of PIS was 14.9%. No statistically significant differences were found in baseline characteristics. The left subclavian artery (LSCA) reconstruction was performed more frequently among the PIS group (45.5% vs 9.5%, p=.008). Major adverse events (MAE) tended to be more frequent in the PIS group, but the difference was not significant (27.3% vs 22.2%, p=.707). At 2-year follow-up, results were comparable between the two groups. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that PIS was not associated with a higher incidence of mortality, endoleak, new-onset AD, or stroke. A baseline neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) >10.3 was associated with greater incidence of MAE. In individuals with IMH, better aortic remodeling evaluated by lower total aortic diameter/true lumen diameter (TAD/TLD) was achieved in the nPIS group (1.23±0.10 vs 1.43±0.07, p<.001), and a TAD/TLD ratio >1.32 was associated with significantly more MAE. Cox multivariate regression analysis also showed that a postoperative TAD/TLD ratio >1.32 was an independent risk factor for MAE (OR, 11.36; 95% CI, 1.53-84.26; p=.017). Conclusions: PIS was associated with a trend toward a higher incidence of MAE after TEVAR. In individuals with IMH, a TAD/TLD ratio >1.32 was an independent predictor of postoperative MAE.

The growing demand for pesticide manufacturing and increasing public awareness of sustainable development, have let to urgent requirements for a refined environmental management framework. It is imperative to conduct process-based life cycle assessments (LCAs) to promote clean and environment-friendly technologies. Herein, the cradle-to-gate LCA of glyphosate production was executed as an example to investigate crucial production factors (materials or energy) and multiple environmental impacts during the production processes. Results showed that methanol caused the highest environmental damage in terms of toxicity, with a normalized value of 85.7 × 10-8, followed by coal-fired electricity in 6.00 × 10-8. Furthermore, optimized schemes were proposed, including energy improvement (electricity generated by switching from coal-fired power to solar power) and wastewater targeted conversion. Regarding the normalization results before and after optimization, the latter showed more significant results with the normalized value decreasing by 21.10 × 10-8, while that of the former only decreased by 6.50 × 10-8. This study provides an integrated LCA framework for organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) from upstream control and offers an important supplement to managing the key pollution factors and control links of the OP industry. Moreover, it reveals the positive influence of optimized schemes in facilitating cleaner production technologies, thus ultimately promoting new methodologies for resource recycling.

Tibetan Plateau (TP) is known as the water tower of Asia, and glaciers are solid reservoirs that can regulate the amount of water. Black carbon (BC), as one of the important factors accelerating glacier melting, is causing evident environmental effects in snow and ice. However, a systematical summary of the potential sources, analytical methods, distributions, and environmental effects of BC in snow and ice on the TP's glaciers is scarce. Therefore, this study drew upon existing research on snow and ice BC on glaciers of the TP to describe the detection methods and uncertainties associated with them to clarify the concentrations of BC in snow and ice and their climatic effects. The primary detection methods are the optical method, the thermal-optical method, the thermochemical method, and the single-particle soot photometer method. However, few studies have systematically compared the results of BC and this study found that concentrations of BC in different types of snow and ice varied by 1-3 orders of magnitude, which drastically affected the regional hydrologic process by potentially accelerating the ablation of glaciers by approximately 15% and reducing the duration of snow accumulation by 3-4 days. In general, results obtained from the various testing methods differ drastically, which limited the systematical discussion. Accordingly, a universal standard for the sampling and measurement should be considered in the future work, which will be beneficial to facilitate the comparison of the spatiotemporal features and to provide scientific data for the model-simulated climatic effects of BC.

BACKGROUND: The use of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) in pancreatic head cancer remains controversial, and an appropriate surgical approach can help improve perioperative safety and oncological outcomes. This study aimed to assess the short-term outcomes and long-term survival of the superior mesenteric artery first (SMA-first) approach in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) undergoing LPD. METHODS: The data of 91 consecutive PDAC patients who underwent LPD from June 2014 to June 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups, the modified SMA-first approach group, using a combined posterior and anterior approach, and the conventional approach group. Perioperative outcomes, pathologic results, and overall survival (OS) were compared between groups, and propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis was performed. RESULTS: The number of lymph nodes harvested was greater in the SMA-first approach group (19 vs. 15, P = 0.021), as did the results in the matched cohort (21 vs. 15, P = 0.046). No significant difference was observed in the R0 resection rate (93.3% vs. 82.6%, P = 0.197), but the involvement of the SMA margin was indeed lower in the SMA-first approach group (0 vs. 13%). There were no obvious variances between the two groups in terms of intraoperative bleeding, operative time, overall and major postoperative complication rates, and mortality in either the original cohort or matched cohort. The median OS was 21.8 months in the SMA-first group, whereas it was 19.8 months in the conventional group (P = 0.900). Survival also did not differ in the matched cohort (P = 0.558). TNM stage, resection margin, overall complications, and adjuvant therapy were independent risk factors affecting OS. CONCLUSION: The modified SMA-first approach is safe and feasible for PDAC patients undergoing LPD. It had a slight advantage in specimen quality, but OS was not significantly prolonged.

Wound repair is a complex problem for both clinical practitioners and scientific investigators. Conventional approaches to wound repair have been associated with several limitations, including prolonged treatment duration, high treatment expenses, and significant economic and psychological strain on patients. Consequently, there is a pressing demand for more efficacious and secure treatment modalities to enhance the existing treatment landscapes. In the field of wound repair, cell-free therapy, particularly the use of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (MSC-Exos), has made notable advancements in recent years. Exosomes, which are small lipid bilayer vesicles discharged by MSCs, harbor bioactive constituents such as proteins, lipids, microRNA (miRNA), and messenger RNA (mRNA). These constituents facilitate material transfer and information exchange between the cells, thereby regulating their biological functions. This article presents a comprehensive survey of the function and mechanisms of MSC-Exos in the context of wound healing, emphasizing their beneficial impact on each phase of the process, including the regulation of the immune response, inhibition of inflammation, promotion of angiogenesis, advancement of cell proliferation and migration, and reduction of scar formation.

Immobilization represents the most extensively utilized technique for the remediation of soils contaminated by heavy metals and metalloids. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that contaminants are not removed during this process, thereby leaving room for potential mobilization over time. Currently, our comprehension of the temporal variations in immobilization efficacy, specifically in relation to amendments suitable for industrial sites, remains very limited. To address this knowledge gap, our research delved into the aging characteristics of diverse oxides, hydroxides, and hydroxy-oxides (collectively referred to as oxides) for the simultaneous immobilization of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and antimony (Sb) in soils procured from 16 contaminated industrial sites. Our findings unveiled that Ca-oxides initially showed excellent immobilization performance for As and Sb within 7 days but experienced substantial mobilization by up to 71 and 13 times within 1 year, respectively. In contrast, the efficacy of Cd immobilization by Ca-oxides was enhanced with the passage of time. Fe- and Mg-oxides, which primarily operate through encapsulation or surface complexation, exhibited steady immobilization performances over time. This reliable and commendable immobilization effect was observed across distinct soils characterized by varying physicochemical properties, including pH, texture, CEC, TOC, and EC, underscoring the suitability of such amendments for immobilizing metal(loid)s in diverse soil types. MgO, in particular, displayed even superior immobilization performance over time, owing primarily to gradual hydration and physical entrapment effects. Remarkably, Mg-Al LDHs emerged as the most effective candidate for the simultaneous immobilization of As, Cd, and Sb. The results obtained from this study furnish valuable data for future investigations on the immobilization of metals and metalloids in industrial soils. They enable the projection of immobilization performance and offer practical guidance in selecting suitable amendments for the immobilization of metal(loid)s.

Background: Colon cancer (CC) is a highly heterogeneous malignancy associated with high morbidity and mortality. Pyroptosis is a type of programmed cell death characterized by an inflammatory response that can affect the tumor immune microenvironment and has potential prognostic and therapeutic value. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between pyroptosis-related gene (PRG) expression and CC. Methods: Based on the expression profiles of PRGs, we classified CC samples from The Cancer Gene Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus databases into different clusters by unsupervised clustering analysis. The best prognostic signature was screened and established using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and multivariate COX regression analyses. Subsequently, a nomogram was established based on multivariate COX regression analysis. Next, gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and gene set variation analysis (GSVA) were performed to explore the potential molecular mechanisms between the high- and low-risk groups and to explore the differences in clinicopathological characteristics, gene mutation characteristics, abundance of infiltrating immune cells, and immune microenvironment between the two groups. We also evaluated the association between common immune checkpoints and drug sensitivity using risk scores. The immunohistochemistry staining was utilized to confirm the expression of the selected genes in the prognostic model in CC. Results: The 1163 CC samples were divided into two clusters (clusters A and B) based on the expression profiles of the 33 PRGs. Genes with prognostic value were screened from the DEGs between the two clusters, and an eight PRGs prognostic model was constructed. GSEA and GSVA of the high- and low-risk groups revealed that they were mainly enriched in inflammatory response-related pathways. Compared to those in the low-risk group, patients in the high-risk group had worse overall survival, an immunosuppressive microenvironment, and worse sensitivity to immunotherapy and drug treatment. Conclusion: Our findings provide a foundation for future research targeting pyroptosis and new insights into prognosis and immunotherapy from the perspective of pyroptosis in CC.

Browning is a crucial factor affecting the quality of fresh-cut apples. A safe, simple, and effective method to inhibit browning is urgently needed in fresh-cut apple production. We carried out this study to explore the effect mechanism of exogenous selenium (Se) fertilizer on fresh-cut apple browning. During the development of apples, 0.75 kg/plant Se fertilizer was exerted on the 'Fuji' apple tree at the critical stage of the young fruit stage (late May), early fruit expansion stage (late June), and fruit expansion stage (late July), an equal amount of Se-free organic fertilizer was used as control. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activities, phenolic and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, antioxidant enzymes activity, and DPPH free radical scavenging rate of the apple at different development stages were investigated. The highest Se accumulation efficiency was observed in apple fruit one month after applying Se fertilizer, which was 41.1%. Se-rich apples exhibited a more remarkable ability to resist browning than control after fresh-cut. The anti-browning effect of the fertilization group (M7) was the best, the PPO activity decreased to 0.5 × 103 U kg-1, and the browning index was 28.6. The total Se content (TSC) of 331.4 µg kg-1 DW and organic Se content (OSC) of 292.0 µg kg-1 DW were the highest in the apple samples, reached the classification standard of Se content in Se-rich food. The correlation analysis found that fresh-cut apple browning was closely related to antioxidant capacity and PPO activity. The stronger the antioxidant capacity of fresh-cut apples treated with Se fertilizer, the lower their browning degree. Therefore, exogenous Se can alleviate fresh-cut apples browning by improving antioxidant capacity and reducing PPO activity. Se-rich apples could increase the Se content of the human essential trace element and inhibit the browning of fresh-cut apples, which would become a new, safe and effective way to solve the fresh-cut apples browning.

Understanding the adsorption behavior of antibiotic molecules on minerals is crucial for determining the environmental fate and transport of antibiotics in soils and waters. However, the microscopic mechanisms that govern the adsorption of common antibiotics, such as the molecular orientation during the adsorption process and the conformation of sorbate species, are not well understood. To address this gap, we conducted a series of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and thermodynamics analyses to investigate the adsorption of two typical antibiotics, tetracycline (TET) and sulfathiazole (ST), on the surface of montmorillonite. The simulation results indicated that the adsorption free energy ranged from - 23 to - 32 kJ·mol-1, and - 9 to - 18 kJ·mol-1 for TET and ST, respectively, which was consistent with the measured difference of sorption coefficient (Kd) for TET-montmorillonite of 11.7 L·g-1 and ST-montmorillonite of 0.014 L·g-1. The simulations also found that TET was adsorbed through dimethylamino groups (85% in probability) with a molecular conformation vertical to the montmorillonite's surface, while ST was adsorbed through sulfonyl amide group (95% in probability) with vertical, tilted and parallel conformations on the surface. The results confirmed that molecular spatial orientations could affect the adsorption capacity between antibiotics and minerals. Overall, the microscopic adsorption mechanisms revealed in this study provide critical insights into the complexities of antibiotics adsorption to soil and facilitate the prediction of adsorption capacity of antibiotics on minerals and their environmental transport and fate. This study contributes to our understanding of the environmental impacts of antibiotic usage and highlights the importance of considering molecular-level processes when assessing the fate and transport of antibiotics in the environment.

BACKGROUND: Transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fusion-guided biopsy has a high clinical application value. However, this technique has some limitations, which limit its use in routine clinical practice. Therefore, the selection of suitable proatate lesions for this technique is worthy of our attention. Synthetic MRI (SyMRI) is capable of quantifying multiple relaxation parameters, which might have potential value in preprocedural evaluation for TRUS/MRI fusion-guided biopsy of the prostate. The aim of our study is to examine the value of SyMRI quantitative parameters in preprocedural evaluation for TRUS/MRI fusion-guided biopsy of the prostate. METHODS: We prospectively selected 148 lesions in 137 patients who underwent prostate biopsy in our hospital. Next, 2-4 needles of TRUS/MRI fusion-guided biopsy combined with 10 needles of system biopsy (SB) were used as the protocol for prostate biopsy. Before biopsy, the MAGiC sequences of the MRI images of the enrolled patients underwent post-processing, and the longitudinal relaxation time (T1), transverse relaxation time (T2), and proton density (PD) were extracted. The biopsy pathology results were used as a gold standard to compare the differences in SyMRI quantitative parameters between benign and malignant prostate lesions in the peripheral and transitional zones. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to confirm the optimal SyMRI quantitative parameter for prostate lesion benignancy/malignancy performance, and the cutoff values of these parameters were used for grouping the lesions. The single-needle biopsy prostate cancer (PCa)-positivity rates (number of positive biopsy needles/total biopsy needles) and PCa overall detection rates by TRUS/MRI fusion-guided biopsy and SB were compared in different subgroups. RESULTS: The T1 and T2 values can determine the benignancy/malignancy of prostate transition lesions(p < 0.01), and the T2 value has a greater diagnostic performance (p = 0.0376). The T2 value can determine the benignancy/malignancy of prostate peripheral lesions. The optimal diagnostic cutoff values for T2 were 77 and 81 ms, respectively. The single-needle PCa positivity rate of TRUS/MRI fusion-guided biopsy was higher than SB for any prostate lesions in different subgroups (p < 0.01). However, only in the subgroup of transition zone lesions with T2 ≤ 77 ms, the PCa overall detection rate of TRUS/MRI fusion-guided biopsy was significantly higher than that of SB (p = 0.031). CONCLUSION: SyMRI-T2 value can provide a theoretical basis for the selection of suitable lesions for TRUS/MRI fusion-guided biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are common intestinal diseases. According to the clinical experience and curative effect, the authors formulated Kuiyu Pingchang Decoction (KYPCD) comprised of Paeoniae radix alba, Aurantii Fructus, Herba euphorbiae humifusae, Lasiosphaera seu Calvatia, Angelicae sinensis radix, Panax ginseng C.A. Mey., Platycodon grandiforus and Allium azureum Ledeb. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to explore the mechanisms of KYPCD in the treatment of UC and IBS following the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory of "Treating different diseases with the same treatment". METHODS: The chemical ingredients and targets of KYPCD were obtained using the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology database and analysis platform (TCMSP). The targets of UC and IBS were extracted using the DisGeNET, GeneCards, DrugBANK, OMIM and TTD databases. The "TCM-component-target" network and the "TCM-shared target-disease" network were imaged using Cytoscape software. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was built using the STRING database. The DAVID platform was used to analyze the Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways. Using Autodock Tools software, the main active components of KYPCD were molecularly docked with their targets and visualized using PyMOL. RESULTS: A total of 46 active ingredients of KYPCD corresponding to 243 potential targets, 1,565 targets of UC and 1,062 targets of IBS, and 70 targets among active ingredients and two diseases were screened. Core targets in the PPI network included IL6, TNF, AKT1, IL1B, TP53, EGFR and VEGFA. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis demonstrated 563 biological processes, 48 cellular components, 82 molecular functions and 144 signaling pathways. KEGG enrichment results revealed that the regulated pathways were mainly related to the PI3K-AKT, MAPK, HIF-1 and IL-17 pathways. The results of molecular docking analysis indicated that the core active ingredients of KYPCD had optimal binding activity to their corresponding targets. CONCLUSION: KYPCD may use IL6, TNF, AKT1, IL1B, TP53, EGFR and VEGFA as the key targets to achieve the treatment of UC and IBS through the PI3K-AKT, MAPK, HIF-1 and IL-17 pathways.

Ferroptosis is a novel form of cell death that plays a key role in several diseases, including inflammation and tumours; however, the role of ferroptosis-related genes in diabetic foot remains unclear. Herein, diabetic foot-related genes were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus and the ferroptosis database (FerrDb). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression algorithm was used to construct a related risk model, and differentially expressed genes were analysed through immune infiltration. Finally, we identified relevant core genes through a protein-protein interaction network, subsequently verified using immunohistochemistry. Comprehensive analysis showed 198 genes that were differentially expressed during ferroptosis. Based on functional enrichment analysis, these genes were primarily involved in cell response, chemical stimulation, and autophagy. Using the CIBERSORT algorithm, we calculated the immune infiltration of 22 different types of immune cells in diabetic foot and normal tissues. The protein-protein interaction network identified the hub gene TP53, and according to immunohistochemistry, the expression of TP53 was high in diabetic foot tissues but low in normal tissues. Accordingly, we identified the ferroptosis-related gene TP53 in the diabetic foot, which may play a key role in the pathogenesis of diabetic foot and could be used as a potential biomarker.

To elucidate the variations in mass concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and black carbon (BC) in PM2.5 and their light absorption characteristics in Lanzhou, we conducted one-year online measurements by using a newly developed total carbon analyzer (TCA08) coupled with an aethalometer (AE33) from July 2018 to July 2019. The mean OC and BC concentrations were 6.4 ± 4.4 and 2.0 ± 1.3 µg/m3, respectively. Clear seasonal variations were observed for both components, with winter having the highest concentrations, followed by autumn, spring, and summer. The diurnal variations of OC and BC concentrations were similar throughout the year, with daily two peaks occurring in the morning and evening, respectively. A relatively low OC/BC ratio (3.3 ± 1.2, n = 345) were observed, indicating that fossil fuel combustion was the primary source of the carbonaceous components. This is further substantiated by relatively low biomass burning contribution (fbiomass: 27.1% ± 11.3%) to BC using aethalometer based measurement though fbiomass value which increased significantly in winter (41.6% ± 5.7%). We estimated a considerable brown carbon (BrC) contribution to the total absorption coefficient (babs) at 370 nm (yearly average of 30.8% ± 11.1%), with a winter maximum of 44.2% ± 4.1% and a summer minimum of 19.2% ± 4.2%. Calculation of the wavelength dependence of total babs revealed an annual mean AAE370-520 value of 4.2 ± 0.5, with slightly higher values in spring and winter. The mass absorption cross-section of BrC also exhibited higher values in winter, with an annual mean of 5.4 ± 1.9 m2/g, reflecting the impact of emissions from increased biomass burning on BrC concentrations.

Ozone pollution has become one of the most concerned environmental issue. Developing low-cost and efficient catalysts is a promising alternative for ozone decomposition. This work presents a creative strategy that using α-Fe2O3-supported Co3O4 nanoparticles for constructing interfacial oxygen vacancies (Vo) to remove ozone. The efficiency of Co3O4/α-Fe2O3 was superior to that of pure α-Fe2O3 by nearly two times for 200-ppm ozone removal after 6-h reaction at 25 °C, which is ascribed to the highly active interfacial Vo. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy suggest that the Fe3+-Vo-Co2+ was formed when Co3O4 was loaded in α-Fe2O3. Furthermore, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the desorption and electron transfer ability of intermediate peroxide (O22-) on Fe3+-Vo-Co2+ are higher than the Vo from other regions. In situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy also demonstrate the higher conversion rate of O22- on Co3O4/α-Fe2O3. Base on the intermediates detected, we propose a recycle mechanism of interfacial Vo for ozone removal: O22- is quickly converted to O2- and transformed into O2 on interfacial Vo. Moreover, O2-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) reveal that the oxygen mobility, reducibility, and conductivity of Co3O4/α-Fe2O3 are greatly superior to those of α-Fe2O3, which is contributed to the conversion of O22-. Consequently, our proposed strategy effectively enhances the activity and stability of the bimetallic transition oxides for ozone decomposition.

Keloids are formed due to abnormal hyperplasia of the skin connective tissue. We explored the relationship between N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-related genes and keloids. The transcriptomic datasets (GSE44270 and GSE185309) of keloid and normal skin tissues samples were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. We constructed the m6A landscape and verified the corresponding genes using immunohistochemistry. We extracted hub genes for unsupervised clustering analysis using protein-protein interaction (PPI) network; gene ontology enrichment analysis was performed to determine the biological processes or functions affected by the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). We performed immune infiltration analysis to determine the relationship between keloids and the immune microenvironment using single-sample gene set enrichment analysis and CIBERSORT. Differential expression of several m6A genes was observed between the two groups; insulin-like growth factor 2 mRNA-binding protein 3 (IGF2BP3) was significantly upregulated in keloid patients. PPI analysis elucidated six genes with significant differences between the two keloid sample groups. Enrichment analysis revealed that the DEGs were mainly enriched in cell division, proliferation, and metabolism. Moreover, significant differences in immunity-related pathways were observed. Therefore, the results of this study will provide a reference for the elucidation of the pathogenesis and therapeutic targets of keloids.

Colon cancer with colovesical fistula (CVF) is a rare complication of colon cancer that possesses an extremely poor prognosis. Surgical treatment can improve the prognosis. The current study presents four cases of CVF, in which the first two cases were treated conservatively and the other two were treated surgically. The first case presented with intestinal obstruction for 3 days, and computed tomography (CT) was performed. The patient refused surgery and still exhibited lower abdominal pain 11 months later. The second case presented with urinary frequency and urgency that lasted for 2 days, and CT was performed. The patient refused surgery and died 2 months later. The third case presented with fecaluria that lasted for 1 month, and CT, endoscopy and one-stage palliative surgery were performed. The patient was lost to follow-up 5 months later. The fourth case presented with acute urinary tract symptoms for 4 months, and CT, endoscopy and one-stage radical surgery were performed. The patient remained disease-free 10 months later. The four cases reported in the present study not only represent excellent examples of the disease spectrum, but also act as a reminder of the possibility of detecting CVF at an early stage of the disease. The present study discusses the epidemiology of CVF, and presents the pattern of CVF in terms of signs, symptoms and imaging examinations, including CT, cystoscopy and colonoscopy, as well as treatment in the early stage of the disease.

Polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs) are a class of synthetic halogenated aromatic compounds, which have gradually attracted widespread attention due to potential environmental risks to humans and ecosystems. This paper presents a literature review of research on PCDEs using PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar as search engines/databases with no constraints on publishing year or number. A total of 98 publications on the sources, environmental levels, environmental behavior and fate, synthesis and analysis and toxicology of PCDEs were retrieved. Existing studies have shown that PCDEs widely exist in the environment with the ability of long-range transport, bioaccumulation and biomagnification, which are almost comparable to polychlorinated biphenyls. They can elicit adverse effects including hepatic oxidative stress, immunosuppression, endocrine disorders, growth retardation, malformations, reduced fertility and increased mortality in organisms, among which some seem to be related to the activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor. PCDEs can be metabolized into other organic pollutants, such as hydroxylated and methoxylated PCDEs and even polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans through biotransformation, photolysis and pyrolysis reactions in the environment. Compared with reviews on PCDEs published previously, some new information and findings are summarized in this review, such as new sources, current environmental exposure levels, main metabolism pathways in aquatic organisms, acute toxicity data for more species and relationships between structural parameters and toxicity and bioaccumulation potentials of PCDE congeners. Finally, current research deficiencies and future research perspectives are proposed to facilitate the assessment of health and ecological risks of PCDEs.
